I have 286 compactable and i bougth 287xl math co-processor and i 
have found out that 286xl chip is not supporting all p.c. clone
i talk to intel and they told that it is new product and having some 
problem. I  you install 287xl and doesn't pass its own diag diskette 
then try with 80287-10 and that will work.. I have just problem with
80287xl chip..Please beware of 287xl chip..
