I tear off the side perfs, and tear off three checks at a time. They feed just fine. If I have fewer than three to print, I just tear off one or two, and they usually go fine, though they tend to skew a bit sometimes. I never got the option to print a partial first page to work, so I don't know how that will work with the laser checks, where that situation will come up. I'm running out of checks, so I'll find out soon...
