The game didn't really crash; if you waited for a couple minutes, it would continue. This was at least greatly repaired in 1.1, although it may still be there. The slowdown occurs when one computer player controls a very large area of the galaxy. The "negative money bug" - where your money goes negative- is definitely gone in version 1.1. A limited amount of free disk space will cause Spaceward Ho! to lose turn update information. 800K should be plenty.
