The only expansion slot the Classic has is a memory expansion slot. There is no need for any contact between the outside world and the expansion slot through any panel ala the SE. What you have found I believe, is the panel that covers the adjustment holes for the in-built screen's brightness, horizontal and vertical alignments, contrast etc. Correct me if I'm wrong on this one.
