He did this by constructing a turing machine, because he thought that this would be simpler than a complete computer. (Which Berlekamp, Conway and Guy constructed in 'Winning ways') Somehow I lost the articles. I would like to read them again (and this time keep them) because now I have also read 'Winning ways'. I believe that the Life computer presented there (or rather the elements to build one) will not work. I hope Callahan's TM will. So if anyone could repost them, or mail them to angelo@gem.stack.urc.tue.nl I'd be very thankful.
