I too deleted all the associated files and tried the 1024x768 drivers. They work like a charm albiet a slightly tarnished one. They tend to leave vertical lines here and there, now and then, but other than that, they are slightly faster and they work better with MDI applications. There were DEFINITELY problems with the old ones now and then with the system menus of MDI children windows. Anyway, I would just delete ALL trident drivers again and reinstall (setup). I deleted tvga.drv, vddtvga.386 and w1024.drv. Ran setup and that was it. Except if you use the 'large' fonts, you'll probably be asked for the fonts disk to load all the fixed (res 8514/a) fonts.
