I had a similar problem: trn wasn't showing me all the messages in a
group. Could it just have been that the last couple of messages had come
in too recently and weren't in the threads database yet?

Anyway, when I switched to rn to read the last couple of messages, it
bitched about bogus groups in my .newsrc (groups I knew damn well were
valid, like comp.sys.amiga.misc!), and then a whole new bunch of groups
showed up (mostly joke alt groups).
