A friend of mine is researching Islam (partly because of current events, partly
because a good friend of hers at work is Muslim).  She has read the Quran
(Penguin paperback edition), but feels she needs a commentary to understand
it, especially how Muslims themselves interpret it.

So, could anyone please recommend a good basic commentary on the Quran?
