This may be it! ------------------------------------------- WHO: Any undergraduates who are American Citizens (no exceptions). WHAT: A summer research program in Intelligent Systems, specifically, Expert Systems and Neural Networks. This is our 3'rd annual REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) and is sponsored in part by the NSF. WHEN: From June 2, 1991 until July 26, 1991 WHERE The American University CSIS Dept. in Washington, D.C. HOW MUCH: YOU get a $2,000.00 stipend, plus FREE room and board. ------------------- That's the basics; here are the details : Why?: To be part of a team made up of faculty and undergraduate student researchers working in the area of Neural Nets and Expert Systems. The team will experiment with software development tools, design and implement software, and develop expert systems applications. You will have the chance to get your hands wet with some very interesting Neural Net research that is actively (and I do mean actively) going on here now. If you are motivated, this is a fantastic opportunity. How will students be compensated?: Student participants will receive a stipend of $2,000 plus FREE room and board (students must live on AU's campus). In addition, there will be opportunities to publish papers about the research carried on in this project. Who is eligible?: Currently enrolled sophmores and juniors who are American citizens are qualified. The American Citizen part is not optional - you HAVE to be an American citizen since this is a government funded project. Participants must also be knowledgeable about Pascal. Some UNIX and 'C' experience is desirable as well as helpful. Essentially, you should be able to write reasonable sized programs (say >1000 lines), and be able to think independently. How to apply: Fill out the application form (Part I) and compose a "Personal Profile" (Part II). The profile should describe your career goals, projects you have worked on, subjects you enjoyed, and why and whether you are interested in teaching/research as a career. The Profile need not be longer than one page. Send the application and profile to: Dr. Larry Medsker Computer Science & Information Systems Department The American University 4400 Massachusetts Avenue N.W. Washington, D.C. 20016-8116 For additional information, contact : Dr. Larry Medsker or Dr. Anita La Salle at (202) 885-1470 (or e-mail to medsker@auvm.bitnet). Fax # : (202) 885-3155 You can also e-mail the Application to : uunet!chopin!nick (me) OTHER STUFF: I did this the first year it was held, and did support for last year's group. My honest feelings are that this an excellent program and that if you can, do it. This is the absolute best way for an undergrad to get a feel for what REAL research is like. It isn't taking classes, it IS research (read: they don't pamper or babysit you). If you are self-motivated and willing (and capable) of doing independant work, this is for you. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Application Form (Part I) NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates Program The American University Washington, D.C.
