The general idea is to try to generate some fruitful interaction between the applied and research communities. Since many people working in the HCI area often wear both hats, I thought that your insights could be particularly valuable. I think some useful examples of interactions might involve cases where new areas/problems for research are discovered in an applied setting, or cases where existing theories have to be significantly extended for successful application. There are, of course, many other examples of interesting and important links. I encourage you to submit relevant work. The turn around time will be quick, and I hope that there will be a larger than usual audience for this issue. Feel free to pass this announcement along to other who you think might be interested. The special issue will focus on fruitful interactions between applied and basic research in cognition. Research involving applications of cognitive psychology to real world problems, as well as applied solutions to practical problems which suggest interesting new research areas are of interest. We encourage submission of papers on the following topics: - cognitive-based design of computer interfaces - cognitive problems observed in complex systems - educational applications of memory and cognition - complex decision making - computer or related aids to memory, problem solving, and decision making - medical or legal memory and reasoning - long-term retention of skills and knowledge - prospective memory Please submit papers as soon as possible.
