Is a sonet connection for Cisco routers (or any other vendor's)
that supports OC-12 or higher likely to be available in the next
year?

Our campus covers over 3k acres and is also multi sited.  It seems
synch optical network could have some advantages over FDDI.  Also
the Navy seems to be moving towards a telco-ish view of communications,
so this architecture would be compilant with that approach.
