Subject: Converting Long variable names

One of the machines to which I port software is old and will not be upgraded.
Its main problem is that it cannot handle variables which are not unique 
in the first 6 characters.  

Is anyone aware of a tool which could digest this code and hand me a macro
file which would #define all the long variables to smaller unique ones?
