It employs DBX and it runs at variable tape-normal speed. Find out what tape brand and type was used to calibrate the electronics. They sometimes mention it in the specs. If you use the same tape as the calibration tape then you'll get performance that best matches the promised specs on the machine. Of course you might want to try other tape formulations if you want to improve some particular aspect of the reproduction (such as output level or brightness.)
