I took the 1.5.10 distribution out of the box and it runs "successfully" on my 386/16. It booted (with the previously discussed awful noise as it tries to break the 1.2M drive :-) from floppy and read the hard disk OK. I do not run minix on that system normally (no disk space), and the 1.2 version did not run successfully on it (unexpected interrupt panic). But you should be safe getting 1.5 .
