I forgot to ask this in the original post: 

Is there any way to introduce a filesystem on top of existing data?
i.e. my data is all there (checked it with de(1)).  All I need is
something to lay down the filesystem structure around it.

Suggestions from filesystem gurus would be greatly appreciated!!
