Software architecture, rather than nitty little issues of this or that addressing scheme, provide the macro-scale benefits needed to construct very large systems. And yet, next to nothing is done in this field, at least in comparison to the amount of effort expended on relatively low-payoff pursuits like adding multiple inheritance to some OO language or another. Why?
