I'm trying to build empire 1.1, and when I do a make depend (using gnu make,
to localize the paths for my system), it tries to run something called
"mkmf"... Any hints as to what is going on and/or where can I get mkmf.

I realize this is not necessarily the group for this question, but I
don't get the gnu groups, and hopefully someone who's built empire will know
what mkmf is.
