It use the TeX DVI info (or the MS Word info, or whatever) to layout a bitmap of the page in memory and then prints the resulting bitmap. The 300 DPI DeskWriter printer will require roughly 16 times as many bits (300/72 x 300/72) to be sent to the printer than the 72 DPI ImageWriter does. To get decent printing speed, you will have to get a Centronics or Appletalk (Localtalk) connection for the printer.
