Well, it turns out that the aha1540 driver in Ix/386 2.2 times out the scsi inquiry function a bit to fast for the slow DAT tape. I've fixed that for now with a patch to the aha1540 driver in ix2.2. The tape runs ok while a little bit slow - I just get about 100KB/s instead of the 180KB/s advertised with the HP35450A.
