They're made by LMS, a joint venture between Phillips and Control Data, have a 400msec access time, and have an imbedded SCSI controller. (ie. they're pretty fast for a CD ROM and can be used in PC's or Macs). I don't know the overall data transfer rate, but I think it's pretty good. The drives are brand new - he got them to sell to a legal firm that was installing a computerized reference library and then the deal fell through, so he's stuck with 'em. You can call Control Data at 800-777-5674 and ask them for exact specs - the model number is CM212. I have one of these hooked to my Mac II and it works wonderfully, and fast enough that I really don't mind running off it, unlike one of the NEC drives I tried recently. They will fit inside a PC easily (that's what they were originally bought for), and Ray has the number of a company that makes the driver software for Macs for them, as well as cases with power supplies. The drives sell for about $500 - Ray is interested in getting $300 for them. All drives come with a manual, 50 pin SCSI ribbon cable (the kind for making the inside connection - not for connecting to Macs - you have to do that one yourself), 2 cartridges for holding CD's, and rails for mounting in a PC or standard 5 1/4 inch drive case (the drives are the same size as a 1/2 height 5 1/4 inch PC floppy drive). Please reply to Ray directly at (412)242-4706 or (508)897-6319. Jon Gotow (jong@k.gp.cs.cmu.edu)
