Watson Research Center Lines: 16 I had problems with this too, until I resorted to a drastic solution. I read the entry for "restore" in info. There is a mandatory command line flag -snn when restoring from a tape with multiple backups on it. The number "nn" is the position of the backup you want, relative to the current position of the tape.
