I'm interested in decreasing the interpretation time/throughput of our
postscript printer, since speed is key to our appliction.  I've heard
about compiled postscript, and I'd like to know:

   - is it a "machine-code" equivalent of the postscript language, or
     a binary bitmap of the page?
  
   - does it decrease interpretation time?

   - do I have to buy a commercial package to do it?
