The first job is to make sure that the printer's there, then it sends the job, then it sends accounting stuff. They must have had problems with lockups on their serial line. Earlier versions of TS were even more anti-social: they assumed that the printer was online, and hung around waiting for a response before moving on to the next phase. Dan Lanciani responded: If I recall correctly, it is doing page accounting by sending jobs to return the pagecount before and after each job.
