In the file combat.c, function ccomp(), the lines: if (odds < MAX_CHANCE) chance = MAX_CHANCE; should be changed to: if (odds > MAX_CHANCE) chance = MAX_CHANCE; We found that without this change, the game was far too easy. The amount of time required between "proficiency" (about 15 HP, a few spells, armor and weapon) to "godhood" was about eight hours of playing.
