Summary: Which version of MSDOS does it need? Keywords: IBM emulator Message-ID: <1991Mar2.184054.21196@daffy.cs.wisc.edu> Date: 2 Mar 91 18:40:54 GMT References: <1991Mar1.113056.142@csc.canterbury.ac.nz> <10446@dog.ee.lbl.gov> <12872@helios.TAMU.EDU> Sender: news@daffy.cs.wisc.edu (The News) Organization: U of Wisconsin CS Dept Lines: 25 I have tried using it and I can't get it to work...The only 3.5" MSDOS disk I had lying around was one formatted on a Toshiba portable IBM clone, and this emulator goes to sleep when it tries to boot the disk - just get a black screen with a flashing cursor. You are still able to exit the emulator with the 3-fingered IBM salute (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and have the system return to normal. It just won't boot with that DOS. (PS. It is version 3.20 Toshiba MSDOS...does this emulator require 3.3 or later or something?) The DOS boots just fine with Transformer, but not with this emulator. The emulator does seem to know it is a system disk, as I tried inserting IBM disks that were not system disks, and it gives the usual "not a system disk" message. Since I haven't gotten it to run yet, I can't give a full review. One thing that should be improved in it are its error messages - the important ones aren't there. If the slightest thing is missing in the DEVS: drawer or something is not set up right the emulator just quits, sometimes with a message stating that this is the demo version. Took me a while to get the thing going, and then it didn't like the MSDOS disk I gave it. -- -- David M. Pochron | "Life's a blit, | and then you VBI." pochron@garfield.cs.wisc.edu |
