BIND does not work at SR10.0 or SR10.1 (I am assuming the problem was in /lib/libresolv), so we ran sendmail with nameservice being done on an Ultrix system (that worked at SR10.1, though not properly since not all subdomains were being tried based on the 'domain' line /etc/resolv.conf).
