Apparently the CLUT (color look-up table) has a standard palette that is used unless some application defines a new palette (such as what happens when you open a GIF file). I have not been able to figure out how to change the default palette, and I'm not sure that I would want to; that might do more harm than good. To determine (in giffer) what a picture would look like using the Mac standard palette, use the command "USE DEFAULT PALETTE (Command ])" under the touchup menu when you have the picture on the screen. This will change the palette from the one currently being used to the system standard. As a side note, I have some spectacular images that I would *love* to use as a startup screen, but they look terrible under the default palette. The one I'm using now is the "don't Panic" planet from Douglas Adams; it fits my state of mind in most cases. _________________________________________________________________________ Dave Hightower | opinion?
