I have a MacProducts (Zoom manufactured) 2400 baud vanilla modem, no fax,
no v.42 etc. It has worked fine for me for about 2 years. sure, i get blasted
with random characters off and on because the line noise is bad here, but
it works ok in general. I recently called MacProducts to find out about
getting a fax upgrade. They got back to me promptly and also called back
about another problem i had later, which was when connecting to telebits,
the modem always ended up connecting at 1200 baud. they researched the problem
and suggested adding a comma or 2 after the number in the dial string so 
that the modem's autobauding started later, when the telebit had already gone
through part of its connect sequence. 

I'm not sure if this fixes the problem, but they did get back to me promptly.
