Did you run bindsetup(8) on the diskless client?

If you did (or if you set it up manually), double-check the
definition of the D (domain name) macro in /etc/sendmail.cf:
# grep DD /etc/sendmail.cf
If it comes back saying
DDlocal
you need to change it to
DDstanford.edu

If that's been done, then make sure that the new config file has been
frozen.  Kill the sendmail daemon, freeze the config file with
# /usr/lib/sendmail -bz
then re-start the sendmail daemon.
