I sympathize -- I was initially very negative about the pseudo-3D effects
in widgets, and remain ambivalent after much use.

If you don't mind my saying so (this is meant more as information than PR)
that is exactly what is provided in the latest OLIT implementation of 3D;
either from a workspace property sheet or by editing the .Xdefaults you may
revert to a 2D interface.
