The information is only hidden in the sense that it is not used to route information. Some mailers do in fact expose that information to the user in the form of "From ", Return-Path:, et al. The information cannot be solely used to route because it would be impossible to have replyable mailing lists. Also, imagine, Roy, a list with 200 recipients at various hosts.
