But, what does one mean by simulation in this context? Steve Hammond (hammond@mcs.anl.gov) correctly points out that ISC supplies a tool that that they call an iPSC/2 simulator. This simulator is basically a debugging tool for iPSC/2 code. The parallel code is run by time-slicing on a sequential machine. One gets no performance information relevant to parallel execution. I suspect that most people are more interested in performance simulation. For example, anyone designing parallel processors needs to do performance simulation to test whether their design is a good one. Presumably ISC has a performance simulator for the iPSC/2 but I doubt that they are giving it away. I am aware of some performance simulation of hypercubes. For example, "Modeling Internode Communication For Hypercube Architectures" by Upchurch and Neuse (SCS Summer Sim Conf, July 89). This paper is based on communication in the JPL Mark III hypercube. Neuse works for SES, and this simulation model is one of the examples you get when you buy SESWorkbench. The model has been extended to the hyperswitch by the authors in a later paper. At MITRE, I wrote one new submodel that converts the original simulation to reflect message passing on the iPSC/2. Currently at MITRE, we are working to develop more general approaches to performance simulation for parallel processing. Any suggestions are welcome !!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Feb 91 13:47:44 CST From: "George Zobrist, Professor" Subject: call for papers - international journal of computer simulation To: simulation@bikini.cis.ufl.edu X-Acknowledge-To: **** CALL FOR PAPERS ****** A MAJOR NEW INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FROM ABLEX PUBLISHING COMPANY INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMPUTER SIMULATION EDITOR GEORGE W. In addition, symbolic models have been built to describe processes such as design, diagnosis, planning, scheduling and simulation. The AAAI-91 workshop on Model-based Reasoning will focus on both innovative and practical ideas which have led to operational success, high performance, or realistic scientific or business complexity. Submissions are solicited concerning the design, implementation, operation, and effects of using model-based systems in various disciplines including engineering, manufacturing and medicine. Discussion of ideas which led to problems and limitations will also be welcome. Submissions describing fielded or field-tested models are particularly welcome. As in past workshops, each author will be asked to prepare a paper for inclusion in a volume of working notes which will be distributed to participants at the time of the workshop. Submissions might choose to emphasize any of the following issues: - Validation: how was validation planned and performed? - Maintenance: who maintains models; what helps or hinders maintenance? - Development methodology: what approaches were taken? - Content: to what extend are models built using standard domain principles, and to what extent are innovative procedures used? - Multiple models: how are multiple models created and related? - Scaleup: how were models extended from prototype to realistic size? Deadlines are as follows: March 8, 1991 Deadline for abstracts (4 page limit) April 15, 1991 Acceptance notices sent May 24, 1991 Camera-ready papers due to AAAI (10 page limit) The workshop will be held at the time of AAAI-91 in Anaheim, during the week of July 15, 1991.
