I think you mean multiprogramming.  Multitasking alone doesn't imply separate
images.  Even with multiprogramming, the 68881 can handle shared segments, if
the library and OS collaborate appropriately.  Multics could do it in '68, so
why can't Unix do it now?  (Actually Mach can).
