As the manual states (footnote on pg 605, under Printing the Display) the serial port must be opened before using ON-MTH to print to the serial port. When the 48 turns off the port is automatically closed, so you must open it somehow. OPENIO will do this without printing or as you noted the other print commands will also do the trick.
