The minimum is 16 bits in and 16 bits out (could be two 8 bit ports). Addition lines, ability to generate interrupts, etc, all useful. I know there are a few printer port cards which actually have full input, but I'm not sure which they are, and they're not really designed for input use, they just sort of have it.
