That must be a BSDism.  SysV doesn't recognize stty rows.

That was useful information.  A number of people mentioned dwrite.
What I ended up doing was setting up a bigscreen Terminal and modifying
termcap and terminfo on the SysV machine to get a 43 line vt100.
Everything worked fine.
