Thanks to all that responded to my query... in summary,

It is normal to have about 10% of your hard disk space be unaccounted for 
when using UNIX.

Now, I don't feel so alienated and unwanted anymore, knowing that all sorts 
of people share my special problem. Everyone, in fact.  : )
