It's notched near the end to help pull out the CPU and, very likely, third-party expansion cards. There's a slot shaped like an old-fashioned keyhole and the wrench locks into place. Once the wrench is settled into the narrow end, you pull on the wrench rather than pulling the expansion card--in my case, the CPU. Very well thought-out.
