I just created a file called: arts_really_long_file_name, the file created without a problem. On a DOS system the file appears to be called ARTS_REA, on a mac the file is: arts_really_long_file_name. For macs, if the file name exceeds 32 characters, it's just truncated. The only real problem that I've noticed is translating mac names into NFS names. spaces and slashes aren't translated into other characters, so you may have problems referencing mac files from Unix systems.
