It sounds like a failing piece of hardware.  Have you tried to hook up a 
different printer to the printer port to see if the printer died?  Have you
hooked the printer to a PC with a known good LPT and printed anything?  If it
works one day and not the next, chances are either the printer is dead, or the
LPT port went south.
