How do I set up X386 1.1 so that I can have xinit "work" from the root
console?

What happens now is that the X screen comes up, but keyboard input does
not work right.  I know that if I run X from a virtual console everything
works fine, but I would like to run X from the console...

I would like to have xdm run at boot up.  The same "problem" occurs.  
I have to switch to a virtual console (ALT-SYSREQ-N) before I can
login.
