Many thanks to those people who send advice on my question two weeks ago about
using a shared /usr.  Especially:

  gengenba@fowiss.uni-passui.edu
  fred@vmsc.uac.uci.edu
  deej@maine.edu
  gedetilgold.cs.manitoba.ca

To summarize: DEC URC came in to help me. All the clients have their own
 / and /var partitions.  All share /usr, /usr/var -> /var  which is the
 big I gotcha to do.  We are running BIND  which works fine: but watch
 for the way the mountd is started on the bindmaster.
