1 John 3.4b:

    "for sin is the transgression of the law."

This reduces the question to "What law?"

    The term "law" is decomposed to:
   
        1: moral law
        2: civil law
        3: ceremonial law

It is generally believed that (2) and (3) have been removed by the cross.
This leaves (1).  What is (1)?  A good start is the 10 commandments. Matthew
5 adds more light.
