So if you did not try timing it yourself, do so; you may find that the throughput is really 622 cps which is at least somewhat more reasonable. You should be able to get at least 800 cps on a good connection with otherwise idle machines, though. UUCP is a windowed protocol, so its throughput will be impaired if you are using a modem that only transmits in one direction at a time. I believe the Hayes Smartmodem 9600 has this property. , Eamonn
