I am using a version of mailx from V 3.2.1 and it produces an extra
file for every email file that it sends.
 
Example:
 
mailx shanley  produced the following email in /usr/mail/shanley
 
>N 95 shanley            Thu Mar  7 19:17    4/85
 N 96 root               Thu Mar  7 19:17   13/340   Testing
 
? Message 95:
From shanley Thu Mar  7 19:17 EST 1991
Content-Type: text
Content-Length: 339

From root Thu Mar  7 19:17:52 1991
