The problem, again, was that the packet transfers failed after a successful login. The reason was that I was using xon/xoff flow control on the serial line between each workstation and its modem. Switching to rts-cts fixed this and another problem involving file tranfers with tip/ymodem-g. Perhaps this is basic knowledge to communications experts, but it isn't mentioned anywhere in the reams of documentation I read before posting here. The quick response is especially appreciated.
