The conditions you describe could be caused by your modem connecting at 1200 baud in stead of 2400 baud (due to a poor line, perhaps). This has occasionally happend to me. If your modem generates a message like "CONNECT 2400" when a connection is made, you can set the "Dialer auto-baud" option in the modem parameters, and JR-Comm will automagically know what baud rate to run at.
