I have seen people getting machines that were manufactered 1-2 years back from mass marketeers. Don't forget that this big box-movers buy in HUGE lots and it takes time to sell them all off. Also the warehouse personnel don't always know the proper procedures for stock rotation and you can end up with a shipment that sits there for a year while other newer shipments go through. This is part of the risk people take when buying 'cheap'. Most specialty retailers never have more than 5-10 units in stock and have a high turnover.
