The Diamond SpeedStar I got with my PC came with a one-page manual addendum.
On it tells how to enable VESA bios extensions.

  MOUSE.COM
  VMODE MONITOR
  VMODE VESA

VMODE VERSION tells me I have "VGA BIOS version 3.10"
