I've done it with elf.

I've played a few times.  It gets a lot easier after you get the magic
items (shot speed, extra armor thing, ...).

The easiest way to do this is to avoid the levels with the lobbers, as they
seem to be by far the nastiest of the bunch (on the mac).  Just wait in some
safe spot (don't shoot things) for the walls to turn to exits.  I've never
played the arcade game, but my friend says that the timeout is shorter for
the mac version (so you lose less food).

After you know which levels to avoid and which ones to play, it gets easy
to get those first potions.
